Built as one of the ten conventional 1938 Locomotive Programme ‘Duchesses’ that Stanier had yearned for, 46232 Duchess of Montrose entered traffic at Camden on 2 July, 1938. Duchess of Montrose was sent to Polmadie at the beginning of January 1940 and was damaged by enemy action while allocated there, on 18 November, 1940.

Duchess of Montrose was sent to Polmadie at the beginning of January 1940 and was damaged by enemy action while allocated there, on 18 November, 1940. Returning to traffic on Boxing Day 1940, the locomotive remained at Polmadie until its withdrawal on 29 December, 1962.
